HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Three candidates are in the running to serve nearly one million residents as Hidalgo County Sheriff.

Democratic candidates J.E. Eddie Guerra and Frank Guerrero will face off March 5.

Guerra has carried the title as Hidalgo County Sheriff for 10 years.

He was first appointed as Hidalgo County Sheriff by the Hidalgo County Commissioner’s Court after former Sheriff Guadalupe Trevino resigned in 2014.

Guerra remained in office as sheriff during this time and won re-election in 2016 and 2020.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Guerra beat Republican challenger Ezequiel Jurado III with 125,342 to Jurado’s 58,029 votes in November 2020.

"My commitment to our Hidalgo County families, as your Sheriff, is to always work towards keeping our communities safe," Guerra announced.

Guerrero announced his run against Guerra in October 2023.

The former deputy has 19 years of additional law enforcement experience as a criminal investigator, SWAT, K9 unit handler and supervisor.

Guerrero's campaign highlights five building blocks modeled to re-create the sheriff's office.

His campaign further elaborates a plan for his first 100 days in office as Hidalgo County Sheriff that include community engagement, collaboration and maintaining law and order.

"As your sheriff, we will reorganize and rebuild the Sheriff's office," Guerrero announced. "I will regain the public's trust, promote safety, security and peace of mind to our citizens."

Whoever wins will go against Republican candidate Ezequiel 'Zeik' Jurado III in the general election.

Jurado III is running unopposed for the Republican seat for Hidalgo County Sheriff. This is Jurado's re-run for the sheriff seat. As previously reported on ValleyCentral, Jurado worked for the Palmview Police Department in 2020.
