Meet the candidates: Cameron County Sheriffs primary election

CAMERON COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Cameron County Sheriffs democratic ballot has four candidates running for office for the March primary elections.

The winner of the March primary election will be facing the Cameron County Sheriff republican candidate Santiago "Jimmy" Manrrique during the general elections in November.

Eric Garza currently serves as Cameron County Sheriff and is running for re-election.

Garza's primary goals during his term are school and law enforcement safety, community involvement and training to prepare future deputies with the skills and tactics required to complete their duties.

"Our mission is to safeguard the lives and property of the citizens we serve by upholding the law, preserving the peace, and providing a safe and secure environment for all," Garza said.

Jesus Rosas Jr. has served his community at the Cameron County Sheriff's Office for 20 years. Rosas is a sergeant with the department.

Ronnie Saenz is a born and raised Brownsville native, who has served his community with 26 years of law enforcement experience.

Saenz's goals as sheriff range from creating a mental health crisis division, establishing a "whole of government" methodology, safer neighborhoods, properly finding the department's needs and building a level of trust in the sheriff's office.

"Fostering these strong relationships will serve as a force multiplier for our community creating a stronger platform and enhancing our ability for a safer Cameron County," Sanez said.

Manuel "Manny" Trevino has 30 years of experience in law enforcement. He has also been the running chief of police for the Primera Police Department since 2011.

In addition, Trevino is the co-founder of the Cameron County Crime Stoppers program, where citizens can anonymously call to submit tips.

The winner of the March primary election will be face off in November against the republican candidate for Cameron County Sheriff, Santiago "Jimmy" Manrrique who is running unopposed.
