"Memorial Day is when we honor all the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives to protect our freedom, our families and protect our country," said Senator Juan Hinojosa.

Marcy Carter-Lovick, State Regent for the Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution, said the public loves to honor its veterans.

"Memorial Day began shortly after the close of the civil war," Carter-Lovick said. "People spontaneously began marking the graves of the fallen soldiers. It was our nations bloodiest war. Someone died in every family, in every community across our beloved nation."

Carter-Lovick cited a Jewish proverb that states a person dies twice, once when the life leaves their body and again the last time their name is said on earth.

"Memorial Day is that opportunity to ensure that we never forget our beloved fallen soldiers," she said. "We can say their name we can remember them and we can reflect on the sacrifices they made."
