MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A newly approved rate increase on utilities in McAllen is in full effect.
Customers can expect to see a $14 increase on their monthly utility bill.
The increase took effect on Oct. 1, after the McAllen Public Utilities Board approved the new utility rate.
According to the city, the rate increase will support construction on the city's North Water Treatment Plant and Brackish Groundwater Desalination projects.
The city of McAllen says that as its community continues to grow, the rate increase will help expand the city's water supply capacity and secure the water needs of its residents for years to come.
“While we understand any increase impacts our customers, this decision ensures McAllen’s water infrastructure keeps pace with future demand and that we are well-prepared to meet those demands," said Mark Vega, General Manager, P.E., McAllen Public Utility.
In a press release, the city of McAllen confirmed it received a $200 million loan from the Texas Water Development Board to fund the construction of the North Water Treatment Plant project.
"The rate increase will help offset the debt service associated with the 30-year repayment of the loan and support other operational costs tied to maintaining and improving McAllen's water and wastewater systems," the press release stated.
Detailed rate information can be found on the McAllen Public Utility website.
