MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The City of McAllen has revoked the permits for a number of downtown bars in the Entertainment and Cultural Overlay District that officials say refused to prevent underage drinking, according to a news release from the city.

During an Aug. 29 city commission workshop, residents demanded the city to hold bar operators accountable to curb underage drinking.

As a result, the city issued citations to 20 nightclubs that failed to take preventive measures.

“They knew we were coming, and they made no changes,” said City Manager Isaac Tawil. “These operators have shown blatant disregard for the law and zero concern for protecting young people in our community. Based on these clear violations, the city has revoked their permits.”

Two critical safeguards against underage drinking, age-verification technology and UV ink to clearly mark patrons under 21, are now being prioritized by the city.

Officials say the following business were issued notices of revocation on Tuesday, Sept. 2 for failing to implement the new safeguards.

  1. The Mini Bar
  2. Valle Verde
  3. Pasha
  4. Scores Bar
  5. Pecado Night Club
  6. Karma/El Belicon

  16. Hustlerz

Mayor Javier Villalobos mentioned they will not tolerate businesses that put profit ahead of public safety.

“The rules are clear, and they exist to protect our youth, our families, and the future of our community. Operators who choose to ignore those rules will face the full weight of enforcement," said Villalobos.

The city says the age verification tools are inexpensive and effective, costing owners anywhere from $250 to $500 annually.

Owners must also still provide surveillance cameras, lighting, and on-site security personnel to protect customers.

According to a news release from the city, during Tuesday’s municipal court docket, bar operators entered 34 misdemeanor pleas, resulting in $11,115 in fines for operating without an SUP or violating its terms.

Over the weekend, 38 citations were issued for fire code violations, operating without permits, and SUP non-compliance.
