McAllen residents protest against bail granted to DUI driver

McALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A group of people gathered Friday in protest of Dionicio Luna Aguirre, who was charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter following a fatal crash.

On May 22, Aguirre was formally charged for the May 17 crash that killed 54-year-old Juan Carlos Perez and 20-year-old Gianncarlo Corriabustos.

Francis Tovias, an Alamo resident and protester, told ValleyCentral, she came in support of her friend and the second victim, who both died in the fatal crash that took place on May 17.

"We want justice because what they gave him as a jail bond is only $600,000," Tovias said. "I believe it's not fair for them to just give him a slap on the wrist."

At approximately 2:29 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, authorities responded to a vehicle collision at the intersection of North 2nd Street, Col. Rowe Boulevard, and Nolana Avenue.

Officers reported that the collision involved a Chevrolet Silverado pickup and a Nissan Altima passenger car, according to a news release from the McAllen Police Department.

The driver of the Nissan Altima was identified as Perez. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger of the Chevrolet Silverado was identified as Corriabustos. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as Aguirre, was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

An investigation revealed Aguirre was driving under the influence when he crashed into the Nissan.

On May 22, he was arraigned and charged with two counts of manslaughter. Aguirre was issued a total bond of $600,000.
