MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The McAllen Public Library invites families to join its award-winning Día de los Niños celebration, honoring El Día De Los Niños and El Día De Los Libros (Children’s Day/ Book Day).

As a nationally recognized initiative, Día De Los Niños is an extension of Children’s Day, which was established in 1925 to emphasize the importance and well-being of children.

Children’s book author Pat Mora in 1996 proposed the idea of linking childhood celebrations with literacy. It gave rise to El Día De Los Niños/ El Día De Los Libros which today highlights the significance of literacy for children of all backgrounds.

This year's celebration includes author presentations by Monica Velasquez and Gaby Tijerina, as well as a special visit by the one and only Pete the Cat.

Guest will have the opportunity to receive a free book while supplies lasts. Additionally, the event will feature music, performances, community partners, snacks, crafts, and other exciting activities.

“Día De Los Niños is a wonderful occasion to celebrate children and foster a love for reading. We are thrilled to host this event for the ninth consecutive year and look forward to welcoming families from our community to enjoy a day filled with books, stories, and fun," said Kate Horan Director of McAllen Public Library

Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Main Library, located at 4001 N. 23rd St.
