A 29-year-old McAllen man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after crashing and killing a 26-year-old woman and injuring her passenger in 2023.
Juan Pablo Torres was convicted Tuesday of intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury for the death of Adrienne Ann Garza and injuring Jacob Peter Medrano, court records show.
According to the initial release, police responded to the intersection of Trenton Road and Closner Boulevard in Edinburg at around 2:09 a.m. in regards to a major crash on Sept. 9, 2023.
The investigation revealed that Torres was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado when he failed to stop at a red light and crashed into a white BMW car.
Police found Torres’ vehicle upside down before he was pulled out of the driver side window, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Officer’s didn’t see any injuries on Torres but noticed he smelled of alcohol on his breath. Police found a beer can inside the Silverado and said that Torres couldn’t conduct a field sobriety test because he was being incoherent and uncooperative.
The affidavit also states that Torres told an officer that he didn’t remember where he was going or where he was coming from and that Torres kept fainting at the scene.
Garza, the driver of the BMW, was pinned between the driver’s side door and center console. The Edinburg Fire Department extracted her from her vehicle.

Medrano, the passenger, told police that he couldn’t remember what happened other than that they were heading home and were hit.
Garza and Medrano were transported to Doctors Hospital Renaissance where Garza was pronounced dead. It was unclear what conditions Medrano were in at the time.
A day later, an investigator met with Torres who confessed to be drinking at Hillbilly’s in McAllen with a friend prior to the crash.
