MCALLEN, Texas – McAllen International Airport set an all-time total traveler record for July in 2024 with 114,694 total passengers, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos has announced.

This is an 8.7 percent increase over the previous record set in June 2024.

Overall air traffic in 2024 has increased 23 percent year-over-year, with 70 percent more flights since same time in 2023.

“McAllen International Airport has set records in 4 of the past 5 years, however this year we have taken it above and beyond,” Villalobos said. “We’re so thankful that more travelers are flying nonstop from McAllen, especially taking advantage of the new nonstop routes.”

Villalobos said three new air carriers and four new nonstop routes from McAllen debuted in 2024: Austin via Delta Air Lines, Mexico City via Aeromexico, Cancun via Volaris and Tampa-St. Petersburg through Allegiant Air.

McAllen airport has seen a high demand for all nine nonstop flights, but especially flights to Mexico City with Aeromexico, to Austin with Delta and to Dallas with American Airlines, Villalobos added.

McAllen Director of Aviation Jeremy Santoscoy said that in addition to providing a premium and comfortable travel experience for those seeking leisure or business travel, all six airlines that fly out of McAllen take passengers to premiere destinations and major airport hubs to travel anywhere in the world.

He pointed out that in April of this year, the City of McAllen was granted $7.4 million in funding to improve and expand McAllen International Airport. He said the funding could not have come at a better time.

As for the specifics of the improvements, Santoscoy shared that the airport is conducting studies to best understand how and where the airport should expand.

“We’re making sure to assess the needs and justification to develop responsibly,” Santoscoy said. “Our stakeholders want to make sure that any decisions with the expansion are thorough and are the best options for our travelers and airlines including those in the future.”
