MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The 23rd annual Amateur Golf Tournament kicked off in McAllen Tuesday morning.
Champion Lakes Golf Course joined Frost Bank and the McAllen Parks and Recreation Department to bring the tournament to the community.
"Promoting golf for youth, for juniors, is very important. It's the future of the game," said Ruben Bosquez, Market President for Frost Bank Rio Grande Valley.
Throughout its 23 years, the tournament has expanded outside McAllen, welcoming golfers from San Antonio, Dallas, Oklahoma, and Mexico.
"Since the very beginning, we wanted to create something special, something that you don't see anywhere else at a municipal golf course in the state of Texas. We wanted an experience that was unique," said McAllen Golf Director Carlos Espinosa.
The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department presented 20 scholarships to assist participants with their golf careers.
