EDINBURG — A 49-year-old Mexican national has been sentenced for his role in beating a man to death outside of a Pharr nightclub almost 25 years ago.

Rigoberto Resendez Jr. has been sentenced to six years in prison Thursday for the death of Alfredo Ontiveros Jr. on June 11, 2000.

A jury convicted Resendez of aggravated assault on April 3. He had been facing a murder charge.

At around 7:43 a.m. on that Sunday, a Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to 4 1/2 south of Business 83 on Valley View Road in Donna in reference to a “man down,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

The deputy received a preliminary offense report where Ontiveros had been identified who had evident injuries and bruises to the face and chest area.

EMS personnel confirmed that Ontiveros was dead, according to the complaint.

One investigator obtained a sworn affidavit from a man named Gilbert Hernandez who said earlier that night four men at the Players nightclub assaulted Ontiveros who lost consciousness after the assault.

Another man named Juan Antonio Ramirez provided a voluntary statement where he admitted to being part of the fight.

“Mr. Ramirez named the person in charge of the Players nightclub, known to him as ‘Rigo,’ as the person who punched and kicked (Ontiveros) causing (him) to lose consciousness,” the affidavit said.

Investigators identified Ramirez and Resendez as the men involved in Ontiveros’ assault.

Charges against Ramirez were later dismissed, court records show.

The following day, an autopsy conducted on Ontiveros’ body revealed he died from blunt force trauma that resulted in his brain swelling.

Years later, Resendez was apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection on an outstanding murder warrant once he arrived at the Hidalgo Port of Entry.

Resendez was then handed over to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office on May 22, 2023.
