BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

On Thursday, a jury found Juan Carlos Cirilo guilty of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to a release from the Cameron County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors asked for 60 years, however the jury did not grant that request. According to the release, prosecutors then asked Judge Juan A. Magallanes to stack the charges, in order for Cirilo to spend more time in the penitentiary. This request was also denied.

“All child abuse is heinous, thankfully the child made an outcry, and Cirilo was identified, arrested, and prosecuted before he could escalate his behavior to further traumatize and violate other children,” said Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz.
