A 31-year-old man recently pleaded guilty to gunning down a man and woman in Brownsville on July 4, 2020.
Martin Medrano-Davila pleaded guilty on March 27 for the double homicide and was sentenced to 22 years in prison, according to Cameron County District Attorney’s Spokesman Christian Mendoza.
It’s not immediately clear whether he pleaded guilty to both counts of murder or a single count. When pressed to say what charge or charges he pleaded guilty to, Mendoza only texted “a double homicide.”
Court records do indicate he reached a plea deal where a separate charge of theft against the man was dismissed.
He was arrested on April 16, 2024 in the 6600 block of Santa Anita Drive. Court records show he was accused of stealing a 2020 GMC Sierra that same day. This is the theft charge that was dismissed.
He was indicted on Aug. 14, 2021 for fatally shooting Ricardo Lopez and Laura Alaniz.
At the time, Brownsville police said in a Facebook post that the murders happened on East 14th Street.
Authorities did not release any other information about the case.
A warrant for his arrest for the double homicide was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear for his arraignment on Oct. 7, 2021.
He has remained held at the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center without bond since his arrest.
