A 40-year-old man died in La Villa on Wednesday afternoon after suffering a medical episode and falling into a canal, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Ramon Rivera III was confirmed to have drowned following an autopsy, the sheriff’s said Thursday.

Deputies responded to a welfare check near a canal bank about 2 miles north of State Highway 107 on Farm-to-Market Road 1425 in rural La Villa.

“A witness reported that while fishing with a friend, the friend appeared to suffer a medical episode and fell into the water,” the release said.

The Elsa Fire Department and the Mercedes Fire Department dive team responded and initiated a search and recovered Rivera’s body.

The sheriff’s office has stated that no further investigation will be taken in this case.
