Man charged with murder of McAllen girlfriend, $11M bond

McALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A man has been charged in the Tuesday night shooting death of his McAllen girlfriend.

Fortunato Barrera Jr., 30 of Edinburg, was charged with murder in connection to the death of Janet Vichique this morning at the McAllen Municipal Court.

Barrera was charged with murder, a 1st degree felony, violation of a protective order, a third degree felony, and abandoning/endangering a child, a state jail felony.

His bond is set at $11,250,000.

Lt. Joel Morales with the McAllen Police Department, said Vichique suffered a gunshot wound and was found at 5:12 p.m. Tuesday at the 2300 block of Maple Ave.

McAllen police say the victim is believed to have been Barrera's girlfriend. Barrera allegedly confronted Vichique in the parking lot before the shooting.

Vichique died of an apparent gunshot wound, according to police. An autopsy is being ordered.
