United States Customs and Border Protection officers at the B&M International Bridge arrested a man attempting to enter the U.S. without any documents to do so after he took his shirt off and tackled an officer, according to a criminal complaint.
Elmor Leonel Ramos-Aburcia was charged with assaulting a federal officer Tuesday.
On that same day, one officer was interviewing Ramos-Aburcia as he was attempting to seek entry into the U.S., but didn’t possess documents to make legal entry, so he was told to return to Mexico.
It was at that point that Ramos-Aburcia took his shirt off and stated he wasn’t going back to Mexico, according to the complaint.
He then tackled the officer causing them to fall to the ground. The officer was later diagnosed with a knee contusion.
“(The officer) got up and closed the gate at the border limit line pedestrian walkway to stop Ramos-Aburcia from making entry into the United States,” the complaint said. “Ramos-Aburcia then climbed the chain linked fence and began scaling his way on the outside of the bridge towards the U.S. of the Port of Entry.”
Ramos-Aburcia then attempted to climb back into the pedestrian walkway but decided not to as he saw several officers waiting to apprehend him, so instead he jumped down a pillar onto the ground.
Officers witnessed Ramos-Aburcia run into the driver side of a Border Patrol unit stationed directly underneath the bridge, according to the complaint.
A Border Patrol agent then entered the unit through the passenger side and attempted to take control of Ramos-Aburcia who began to rev the unit’s engine.
The agent was “physically struggling with Ramos-Aburcia as he was attempting to pull him away from the steering wheel and fleeing with the unit,” the complaint said.
Another CBP officer saw the struggle and decided to climb the chain linked fence as well, assisting the agent struggling with Ramos-Aburcia while giving him verbal commands.
During the struggle, Ramos- Aburcia attempted to grab the officer’s weapon from his holster but failed before being removed from the vehicle where he was subdued by assisting agents, according to the complaint.
The document goes on to state that the agent struggling with Ramos-Aburcia was bit twice on his right forearm.
Ramos-Aburcia was secured, taken into custody and transported to the Brownsville Border Patrol Station in Olmito.
He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Betancourt Thursday morning in Brownsville federal court for his initial appearance and is scheduled for a preliminary examination hearing on Wednesday.
