SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron County Beach Access Number Three, just north of Andy Bowie Park, is undergoing major renovations within the next six to nine months.
On Monday, County and SpaceX officials gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to announce improvements at Beach Access Number Three on South Padre Island, which is located at 28495 State Park Road 100-North.
County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. listed the new improvements as two pavilions, an ADA-friendly parking area, picnic tables, restrooms, barbecue pit areas, a new toll booth, and more.
Treviño says he felt these changes were needed.
“Quality of life is important to the people of Cameron County. We’ve invested over $50 million in the last several years to enhance our coastal parks and our community parks. Quality of life is paramount, and we want to make sure people have the ability to take advantage and utilize the beautiful resources that we have here," Treviño said.
Treviño shared that this project was made possible due to partnerships with the Texas General Land Office and SpaceX, which donated over $4 million.
In addition to the improvements happening at beach access three, County Parks Director Joe Vega also said they are looking forward to renovating other areas of the county’s park system on the island.
One of the big projects is the improvement of the RV park located at Isla Blanca Park. The goal is to improve the infrastructure, water, sewer system, and electricity. The renovations will keep the park closed for a year.
Vega said construction will begin in October, and although the RV site will be closed, surrounding areas will remain open.
Treviño also added that they have several county-wide projects they are working on. They have initiated projects at Edwin King Atwood Park as well as Olmito Park and have more in the works.
