Macias: When you walked around the neighborhood, it was like you were walking in a cloud of dust

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Brownsville City Commissioner Linda C. Macias has given an update on her battle to improve the quality of life of 250-plus residents living near the Milwhite Incorporated factory.

The company is facing lawsuits from the State of Texas, the City of Brownsville, and local residents over the dust and noise created by activities at the plant. Helen Ramirez, Brownsville’s city manager, says she has never seen a company with as many code enforcement violations in her 20 years in local government.

In her exclusive interview with the Rio Grande Guardian, Macias said she remembers the first time she went block walking in the neighborhood.

“Their roofs, their houses were dusted. Covered in dust. And I asked them when the last time that they washed a car and it was just yesterday, the day before. We went into people’s backyards, their grass was completely covered in dust. If you kicked the grass, the dust was going to bounce up in the air. Their swimming pools were covered in dust. You can see it at the bottom of their pool, which is not enjoyable or safe to be swimming on. Children’s playgrounds were completely covered in dust as well. We saw a lot of neighbors who were deficient in vitamin D because they couldn’t go outside. We saw mental health as well. When you walked around the neighborhood, it was like you were walking in a cloud of just dust.”
