ALAMO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) is joining other civil rights groups to take legal action over the repeal of the Texas Dream Act.
The Texas Dream Act allowed undocumented and documented students across the state to receive in-state tuition and grant eligibility at public universities.
The Texas Dream Act was repealed on June 4, following a lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) arguing the act violated federal law.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton agreed and moved forward to repeal the act, affecting thousands of undocumented students across the state.
"Taking away in-state tuition in Texas isn't just a policy change it's a direct attack on undocumented young people," said LUPE Executive Director Tania Chavez.
LUPE has joined the American Civil Liberities Union (ACLU), the Texas Civil Rights Project, the National Immigration Law Center and Democracy Forward to file a lawsuit against Texas and the DOJ.
"This decision doesn't just hurt students. It crushes families. It fuels anxiety. It forces teens to choose between school and survival. No one should be punished for trying to build a better future," Chavez continued.
This is a developing story.
