Love between the buns: Social media campaign leads writer to Seymour’s Deli in McAllen

McALLEN — Upon entering Seymour’s Deli, you’ll see a framed Monitor article from 2010 with the headline “Still Cookin’ After All These Years.” While making your way to the pick counter of the restaurant, you’ll see Jim Wood still hard at work.

If that isn’t a sign that you’re about to get a passionately made sandwich with the experience of years between those buns, then I don’t know what is.

For this week’s South Texas Flavor, I checked out the viral Seymour’s Deli, and it should be on every sandwich-lover’s list.

A few weeks ago, a Facebook post probably appeared on your feed, about the deli not receiving a lot of traffic, in which a customer noticed the owner being a bit down from that. That post would blow up and mobilize Rio Grande Valley residents to help out the deli, by coming out for a bite to eat.

I’m about a week late, but made my way to 2616 North 10th Street to try it out. It was about 4 p.m., and the deli still had a steady flow of people coming in.

The menu is simple but has a good amount of variety of sandwiches, pizzas and salads.

I asked the nice young lady at the register what she would recommend, and she said the Pastrami Reuben, so I got it but opted for sourdough bread to switch it up.

I also got a small pepperoni pizza.

The order came out quickly as I was drinking some mango tea.

The Pastrami Reuben had pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing. It was cut in half, and when I pulled apart the two pieces of sandwich apart, it was something out of a commercial. You should have seen the look on my face biting into the delicious sandwich.

The sandwich was great and had tons of flavor packed between the sourdough buns. The swiss cheese really made the difference for me and just put together the mix of flavors into something I’ve never had before —but will now be my go-to sandwich at the deli.

I got the smaller option to save space for the pizza, but it was still a good size and will opt for the larger size next time I visit.

The six-inch pizza was great as well. It’s a cute little pizza, perfect for a lighter, quick lunch. What really made it stand out is the dough. It was soft with a slight crisp and a had a good garlic taste to it.

I was a bit surprised the little pizza was so good and will look to try the different options and a bigger size.

During my meal, I was caught deli-handed mid-review by my Monitor colleague Frank, who said he often comes to the restaurant. I can see why, with the quality of food and price.

My meal also came with a drink and chips and came out to a total of $20 bucks. It could have easily been shared with someone.

Another thing I enjoyed was the music selection. I hate silence and need some kind of background noise. A great playlist just always makes the environment and even the food better.

I’m an old soul and mostly listen to older music such as funk, disco, ‘dad’ rock, old R&B and, essentially, music made way before my time.

Seymour’s Deli was playing some bangers such as “West End Girls” by Pet Shop Boys, “Fantastic Voyage” by Lakeside and yacht rock such as “Lotta Love” by Nicolette Larson.

The yacht rock really set me in a good mood ,and watching the owner go around greeting customers with a big smile and friendly attitude, I could tell he’s a chill yacht rock type of dude.

I could tell Jim has put a “Lotta Love” into his business and into the sandwiches that he crafts up every day. Another reason for people to go out and support local business such as Seymour’s Deli.

Seymour’s Deli is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
