LOS FRESNOS — The Los Fresnos Falcons locked up their 8th district championship in 12 years after defeating the Brownsville Hanna Golden Eagles 68-39 on Tuesday at Los Fresnos High School.

The Falcons (25-8, 6-1) clinched at least a share of the 32-6A crown and can win it outright with one more victory.

The loss knocks the Golden Eagles (23-11, 3-3) out of the district championship race, but Hanna has already secured its spot in the postseason.

“The kids followed the game plan. They did what they needed to do and we got a group that’s bought in and understands what we expect on the basketball court,” Los Fresnos head coach Marco Hinojosa said.” Their job is not finished right now. Our goal is not to share. We allowed that to happen last year and the kids know the feeling — it was an ugly feeling — so we’re going to try to not allow that to happen this time.”

Los Fresnos was locked in from the jump and on the same page on both ends of the floor. The Falcons contested everything inside, crashed the boards collectively and picked apart the Eagles’ zone offensively.

Senior Gio Galvan led Los Fresnos with a game-high 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Junior Eric Salazar scored 11 points and pulled down eight boards, while Andrew Munoz finished with eight points.

“From the start, we were hyped with our music and practice before the game. It just leads to this,” Galvan said about the Falcons’ 29-point victory.

Hanna was led by 11 points from Daniel Torres, nine from JJ Gutierrez and seven from Rolando Roman.

Los Fresnos can now clinch the 32-6A championship outright with a win against San Benito at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday at Los Fresnos High School. The Falcons were also in position to win an outright district title last season before falling in their season finale, resulting in a three-way split of the 32-6A championship.

“The job is not finished,” Salazar said. “Last year, we came in here and we shared. Next week, we’re coming with the same energy (as tonight) and we’re going to win a district title by ourselves.”

Hanna has two district games remaining with a road test against San Benito at 7:30 p.m. Friday and a home contest at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday against Brownsville Veterans.
