LOS FRESNOS — The Los Fresnos Falcons have had a lot of success in the Valley the last few seasons, but no deep playoff run like in 2021 when they went to a regional championship.

The Falcons will have a chance to make it back to a regional final this weekend if they can take down Lake Travis in Corpus Christi.

The Falcons and Cavaliers meet at 6 p.m. Friday for Game 1 of the Class 6A DI Regional Semifinals at Whataburger Field in Corpus. Game 2 and 3, if necessary, are scheduled for a noon start Saturday at Whataburger Field.

Los Fresnos has boasted one of the best programs in the Lower Valley for a decade. The Falcons missed out on the playoffs 10 years ago, and haven’t been absent since.

“I am proud of what we have done,” senior Emilio Martinez said. “Not only this year, but the past four years. I’m really excited for the third round … we have had this curse of not making it past the second round so it feels nice finally getting over that little slump.”

Los Fresnos went undefeated in District 32-6A this season before knocking out La Joya High in the bi-district round and Laredo United South in the area round.

“We have performed well. We have been through some adversity the first couple rounds. They bounce back, keep fighting and we have been blessed that these kids fight until the last inning and last out,” head coach Rene Morales said.

Los Fresnos has a senior-heavy ball club in 2025 and they have high standards and expectations for themselves. Not making past the first couple rounds in recent years was a hard pill to swallow.

“It for sure bothered me these last three years,” senior infielder Aleck Rodriguez said. “We are finally past it and it just feels great. I am just playing so free after being stuck in the second round for so long.”

Rodriguez and Martinez said they are ready for anything to happen against Lake Travis. They understand the caliber of team that the Austin-area school has.

The Falcons have a strong pitching core this season and pitching at this stage of the playoffs is key as the games become tight. Los Fresnos has three pitchers ready to go for a series. Morales said they attack batters well and do not let their pitch count rise.

“We are feeling pretty great. We have three main guys here,” senior pitcher Joaquin Cavazos said. “Each of us have certain skills that we are best at. We are going to go up there, attack the zone and let our defense do the rest.”

The Falcons’ pitchers have had to operate in tight situations. Each game in the United South series was decided by a run.

Los Fresnos expects to compete against Lake Travis. They having the pitching and well-rounded lineup filled with players going to the next level. It could be this senior-loaded team’s last week together after spending years in the program, one that they embrace.

“This program is great,” Cavazos said. “It doesn’t just teach us playing baseball, it teaches us how to be young men, how we are on-and-off the field, be great and be a great person … I have played a lot with these guys since little league, these guys are my brothers and I am proud of us that we are able to get this far.”
