EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Alberto's impact on the Rio Grande Valley, one local mechanic is stepping up to offer a helping hand to those in need.

Edinburg mechanic Alexis Alberto Mireles took to social media to promote his heartfelt initiative of free roadside assistance for individuals affected by the storm.

"When I saw the storm, I was like 'I'm just gonna put it out there. if they need help i'm just going to help them for free'," Mireles said.

Mireles is a seasoned traveling mechanic and started receiving many messages and phone calls from people asking for help after his post quickly garnered attention. He said it was difficult to keep up with the demand by himself, but he's taken as many calls as he can, driving all across the Valley.

Mireles said he is not concerned about the money and just wants everyone to be safe.

"She sent me twenty dollars and said 'that's all I have'," Mireles said about a woman whose car he pulled out of the mud. "I gave it back to her and said 'Nope, I'd rather you get back on your feet and when you get on your feet you can either send it back or use it for whatever you need."

Those who Mireles has helped so far have posted thankful reviews on social media.

"I got a flat on the expressway and it was such a terribly unsafe spot to be with little to no shoulder. Like an angel, you stopped and helped me from a scary situation." One woman posted on the RGV Reviews Facebook page.

With the Valley bracing for another round of potentially heavy rains this weekend, Mireles remains steadfast in his commitment to assisting those in need. He encourages anyone in need of roadside assistance to reach out to him directly.

"Let's say within a month we get another storm, I'm still going to do it for free," Mireles said.

Mireles said he will continue offering his free services to those affected by weather throughout the rest of hurricane season.
