BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The first client of a new fiber optic company now serving Brownsville is now online and the city and company officials want everybody to know that.

The East Los Ebanos Street resident is now connected as a Lit Fiber client and he is now hooked up to a fast speed and reliable system that will soon serve the whole city.

“As a semiprofessional streamer, you need this type of Internet service to make it in this field,” said Jay Hicks after being presented as the new company’s client on Wednesday, Aug 7. “Being the first customer, the day of installation went real smooth.”

He said he got connected a couple of weeks ago and added he has not had any issues whatsoever.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “I am very impressed with Lit Fiber.”

Ron Frie, Lit Fiber’s vice president of operations, said the company’s goal is to have up to 100 miles of fiber optic in Brownsville and will expand to other areas once they accomplish their objective.

Richard Hogue, another company official, said they are glad to be here and are directly in line with the progress the city is experiencing today and in the near future.

The event drew a number of city officials and company employees who could not hide their enthusiasm for learning and exposing the project advancement.

It was back in March of this year when Alabama-based Lit Fiber announced it was opening a demo center on East Levee Street, creating about a dozen jobs and becoming the city’s second major Internet provider.

“We are excited to be working in Brownsville,” A.J. Whitehurst, the company’s vice president of strategic initiatives, said at the time. “There has been a lot of work behind the scenes and we are now poised to propel this city into (one of) of the nation’s fastest and interconnected cities.”

LIT Fiber has a center in Ohio and its second one now in Brownsville.

Brownsville Mayor Pro Tem Rose Gowen said they have worked hard in making the Lit Fiber project become a reality.

“It’s such a welcome thing to see this day,” she said. “As a doctor, I can see this playing a big role in telemedicine.”

Gowen said the people of Brownsville need all the options available when it comes to today’s technological advances and she expressed confidence Lit Fiber will provide some of these much needed services.

Helen Ramirez, the city’s manager, said Brownsville is a model for the nation for having the public and private enterprise working together for the betterment of all.

“This is the result of many, many years of hard work,” she said. “This is history being made.”

According to a fact sheet available at Wednesday’s event, Lit Fiber Internet prices range from $14.99 a month for some qualifying customers needing assistance to $69.99 a month for others.
