La Joya ISD said Tuesday a student’s report of a possible weapon on campus that prompted a lockdown at Palmview High School was actually a wallet.
According to a statement from district spokesperson Blanca Cantú, the high school was placed on lockdown 3:51 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of a possible weapon on campus.
Lloyd M. Bentsen Elementary, a neighboring campus, was also placed on a secure status out of an abundance of caution, officials said.
“According to school officials, a student reported seeing an individual pull a large object from their pocket, prompting immediate concern,” the statement said. “The student notified a teacher, who then alerted campus administration.”
As a result, following established safety protocols, a coordinated response was initiated.
After locating and searching the individual, the statement said officials determined the object in question wasn’t a weapon, but instead a “large wallet.”
By this point, misinformation had already quickly spread throughout social media about the cause of the lockdown.
The lockdown at the high school and the secure status at the elementary were both lifted at 4:52 p.m. following the investigation confirming there was no threat to students or staff at both campuses.
“We appreciate the swift actions of our students and staff and thank our families for their patience and understanding. We take all reports seriously and remain committed to ensuring the safety of everyone on our campuses,” the statement said. “We also extend our sincere thanks to all law enforcement agencies who responded (on Monday). We appreciate your continued partnership in keeping our schools safe.”
