LA JOYA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The La Joya Independent School District is encouraging health and wellness in a series of events targeted at promoting diabetes education, prevention, and collective wellness in the Rio Grande Valley.
The district, in observance of Diabetes Awareness Month, will hold community-centered health events designed to bring families together through learning and movement.
"Health and education go hand in hand," said Annette Lozano, Executive Director of Student, Family & Community Engagement. "By empowering families with knowledge and access to wellness resources, we are building a stronger, healthier community for our students and future generations."
The series of events start on Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. with a "Cooking for Life" Parent Workshop hosted at the La Joya ISD Planetarium. Families will take part in a cooking demo and an information session where they will learn about reading nutrition labels, managing sugar intake and shopping for healthy and affordable food.
"In an area like the Rio Grande Valley, where diabetes affects so many of our loved ones, awareness and early prevention can make all the difference," said Lozano. "When our schools and families unite for a cause like this, we create change that reaches beyond the classroom and into the community."
The events will take place at the following times and locations:
- Tuesday, Nov. 4, 11 and 18 - "Cooking for Life" Parent Workshop
La Joya ISD Planetarium from 10 to 11:30 a.m. - Tuesday, Nov. 11 - Family Wellness Night
La Joya ISD Planetarium from 6 to 7 p.m. - Saturday, Nov. 15 - Diabetes Awareness Community Walk
La Joya ISD Pack Stadium from 8 to 10 a.m.
These events are all leading up to the district's annual Diabetes Awareness Community Walk happening on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 8 a.m., at La Joya ISD Pack Stadium.
