La Feria mom, boyfriend charged after child admitted to ICU

LA FERIA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A mother and her boyfriend are behind bars on child abuse charges after the mother's child was found with multiple injuries.

Kayla Rangel, 25, and her boyfriend, Anthony Nino, 23, were arrested Tuesday afternoon after police were contacted by Valley Baptist Medical Center.

According to police, Valley Baptist informed police about a child who was admitted into the ICU by his grandmother.

The patient, confirmed to be Rangel's child, showed signs of malnutrition with bruises and fractures.

Police say some of the bruises were recent.

Rangel's child was immediately transferred from Valley Baptist to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi.

According to police, Rangel provided a statement to Child Protective Services only. The boyfriend refused to speak to the authorities.

Rangel was charged with injury to a child and child endangerment.

Nino was charged with injury to a child due to omission, since he did not report the crime. He was also charged with endangerment of a child.
