La Feria dominates during Day 1 of Tommie Wiseman tourney

LA FERIA — It was an easy first day of the 50th annual Tommie Wiseman tournament for hosts La Feria.

The Lionettes cruised into the platinum bracket of their home tournament Friday, but haven’t had it easy all season. La Feria has bested strong Upper Valley teams in non-district and could meet more of the Valley’s best in bracket play.

La Feria takes on Edinburg North at 10:30 a.m. in the first semifinals game at La Feria High School.

“We had a great start, the girls are playing well together,” Lionettes head coach Delia Lopez said. “We had a couple of new girls that we moved up from JV, they are juniors and working to mesh with my seniors.”

The Lionettes have a strong senior group that has made it to the area round of the Class 4A playoffs for three straight seasons. Lopez hopes her team can continue working hard and playing together as district nears.

La Feria has picked up wins over Sharyland High, Sharyland Pioneer and McAllen High as well as strong showings against competition from outside the Valley. The Lionettes picked up a win over Edinburg North 43-39 on Tuesday.

The Cougars have made it out to the playoffs out of District 31-6A the past two seasons. Edinburg North advanced out of a pool that consisted of PSJA High and Rio Grande City.

The other semifinals game is Rio Hondo versus Harvest Christian at noon, immediately after La Feria and Edinburg North.

Rio Hondo advanced with wins over Edinburg Economedes and Los Fresnos. The Bobcats are taking a break from District 32-3A, where they are 3-0, and will have their toughest challenge against the TAPPS 1A defending champs.

The Eagles entered the Tommie Wiseman coming off a rare loss. Harvest Christian is 12-2 with losses to McAllen Rowe and Brownsville Veterans on Tuesday, but picked up wins over La Joya Palmview, the defending District 30-5A champs and San Perlita, another usual playoff team – from Class 1A.

It’s been busy as usual this season for Harvest Christian and Rio Hondo as well, setting up an intriguing meeting at the Tommie Wiseman tournament.
