SAN ANTONIO — New Braunfels Canyon scored three straight touchdowns to close out Friday’s Class 6A DII area-round contest against Brownsville Veterans, including a 2-yard go-ahead touchdown with 3:01 remaining to end the Chargers’ season 38-35 at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.
The Cougars advance to a Region IV-6A DII semifinal to take on San Antonio Harlan. Brownsville Veterans ends the year with a 8-4 overall record.
“The one thing I have to tell them (the team) is the same thing I tell them everyday and that is that I love them,” Brownsville Veterans head coach JC Ramirez said. “Right now we had a moment where we spoke truths over their lives. Fact of the matter is, regardless of how this game played out and obviously we didn’t win, these guys are champions because they bought into this program. Some of these seniors are four year letterman that have been playing as freshman at the varsity level. They did it the right way and I couldn’t be prouder of who they are as people and who they’ve been as part of this program.”
Trailing 17-14 at the break, the Chargers stormed out of the gates in the third quarter, scoring three straight touchdowns to take a 35-17 lead with 3:53 left in the period.
Sparking the run was senior quarterback Storm Montoya, with the four-year letterwinner carrying a pile of defenders 16 yards to the end zone to start the third.
Montoya added his third rushing touchdown of the night just three minutes later, putting the Chargers up 28-17 with 7:37 left in the third. Montoya finished the game with 157 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries, also adding a 23-yard touchdown pass to Sergio Sosa in the first.
A 42-yard touchdown run by senior Calvin Trevillion capped the 21-0 third-quarter run by the Chargers, putting them up by 18 late in the period.
Canyon came right back with three straight touchdowns of its own, with Jackson Reagan scoring two of those touchdowns during the final quarter to complete the comeback and end the Chargers’ season. Reagan finished the game with 34 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chargers finished the season as the District 32-6A runner-up in their first year in Class 6A since 2016, also winning their first playoff game at the 6A level this year.
“5A, 6A, 3A or 2A you work hard and you go out with your best 11 versus their best 11,” Ramirez said. “The bigger classification just means you have a bigger talent pool at each school because you have more kids at your school. Luckily we’re at a school where the community and our student body believes football is something important for us. We’re very demanding as far as the standard we have. … Charger football is not for everybody. There is kids at other programs where they can put on the jersey and dress out and be okay with being okay. That is not who we are. Our standard is super high. Our expectation is to come out and compete at the highest level. … Charger football is Charger football, baby. We’re going to come right at you. Tonight we did that. We just fell short tonight but it won’t take anything away with how proud we are of our boys.”
