A jury last Thursday convicted a 49-year-old Mexican national in a beating death in Pharr that happened nearly 25 years ago.
Rigoberto Resendez Jr. was convicted of aggravated assault, court records show.
The man was facing a murder charge for the June 11, 2000 beating death of Alfredo Ontiveros Jr.
Resendez was booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on May 22, 2023 after U.S. Customs and Border Protection took him into custody after discovering that he had an active warrant at the Hidalgo International Bridge.
The assault happened at 7:43 a.m. that day when sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Business 83 and Valley View Road in in reference to a “man down” call, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Authorities found Ontiveros with injuries and bruises to his face and chest area. He later died from his injuries.
A witness told investigators that Ontiveros was assaulted by four men at the Players nightclub in Pharr. Following the assault, Ontiveros lost consciousness.
One of the men involved in the fight — Juan Antonio Ramirez — told investigators that Resendez was in charge of the club and that he “punched and kicked” Ontiveros, according to the affidavit.
Ramirez was arrested and charged with murder, but the case against him was later dismissed, according to court records.
Resendez is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday afternoon.
He has remained jailed since his arrest on a $150,000 bond.
