CAMERON COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Former long-time Cameron County Clerk Joe G. Rivera died April 2, local officials confirmed.
Rivera is described by his colleagues as fixture in Cameron County, serving in various capacities.

Most notably, Rivera served as County Clerk for 38 years. During his tenure, Rivera was responsible for filing county records such as real estate deeds, business names, vital statistics, military discharge papers and hundreds of other types of documentation.
Additionally, in his capacity as county clerk, Rivera was responsible for serving as clerk for the commissioners court.
"My heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Rivera family, especially his wife Ofie and his children, all his friends and those impacted by this untimely loss. We will always remember Joe for his passion and commitment to serve his community along with his ability to always make everyone around him smile and laugh, knowing that he was a good man and friend to everyone. He proudly served the people of Cameron County for many years. May he Rest in Peace," said Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevio, Jr.
Cameron County Commissioner for Precinct 4 Gus Ruiz stated that he was saddened to hear the news of Rivera's passing.
"Joe's unwavering passion and dedication to the community will always be remembered. He selflessly served the people of Cameron County for many years, leaving a lasting impact on all those who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time," Ruiz wrote in a public statement.
