EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Police have detained a 14-year-old girl who is connected with a recent threat made against Vanguard Academy in Edinburg.

Authorities say the teenage girl is an incoming freshman at Vanguard Academy.

Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala emphasizes the urgency of responding to school threats in the area.

"As we head into another school year, I want the community to know that we take any threat against our schools extremely seriously," Ayala said. "Student safety is our top priority, and we will continue to act swiftly and decisively to ensure our schools remain safe spaces for learning."

According to police, the teenage girl was detained last month for a separate and unrelated threat for allegedly bringing a kitchen knife on campus grounds at Barrientes Middle School.

She was detained for the alleged knife threat on June 23.

The teen is currently in the process of being admitted to a juvenile detention facility.

This is an ongoing investigation.
