EDINBURG, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley’s inaugural COVID- 19 Heroes and Memorial Day celebration will take place on March 4.

The event has come about thanks legislation – House Bill 2166 – authored in the Texas House by Rep. R.D. ‘Bobby’ Guerra and sponsored in the Texas Senate by Sen. Morgan LaMantia.

Guerra pointed out that the first confirmed case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in Texas on March 4, 2020.

“This legislation, HB 2166, designated the day as a time for reflection and tribute, solemnly remembering those who tragically lost their lives while also commemorating the resilience of healthcare personnel, first responders, and essential workers who continue to serve as our COVID-19 heroes,” Guerra said.

“Throughout the unprecedented challenges of the past four years, our heroes have displayed courage in the face of adversity, continuing to provide critical medical care and access to essential services.”

LaMantia concurred.

“COVID-19 Heroes and Memorial Day serves as a reminder of the strength of Texans in the fight against the pandemic. We welcome you to join us in this inaugural celebration to express our gratitude to the heroes keeping our communities healthy and pay tribute to those we have lost,” LaMantia said.
