In time for spooky season, there’s classical by candlelight in Brownsville

Imagine listening to a live, classical version of “Tubular Bells” by Mike Oldfield — the lilting, terrifying theme of “The Exorcist” — with only a low glow to light the room.

The spooky, multi-sensory musical experience is a reality.

Candlelight: A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics will feature a unique program with shows at 6:30 and 8:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Historic Alonso Building, 510 E. Saint Charles St. in Brownsville.

The event will feature favorite movie soundtracks, including “The Addams Family,” “Beetlejuice,” “Ghostbusters,” “Thriller,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and more. Ages 8 and older are welcome to attend.

If you’re a believer in intersecting worlds (dare to say, “hauntings”), the 147-year-old Alonso Building could be an appropriate venue for the event. Spanish-born Manuel Alonso constructed the one-story residence in 1877, and had added the two-story mercantile building by 1890.

The structure, now under the direction of the Brownsville Historical Association, includes evident French Creole and Spanish influences in the cast-iron porch elements, French windows and corbelled brickwork, the organization reports on its website.

Candlelight concerts are a series of original music concerts created by Fever, a life-entertainment platform, aimed at democratizing the access to classical music.

Flameless candlelight invites a broader audience that might have never considered a classical music concert before to connect with the most iconic pieces of the greatest composers and listen to the top hits of well-known artists in a different way.

Tickets for Candlelight: A Haunted Evening of Halloween start at $49 and are available for purchase here.
