Importance of organ donation, how to be a donor

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The South Texas Health System discussed the importance of organ donation during National Donate Life Month.

They highlighted the disparity in organ donation among Latinos, noting that while they make up a significant portion of the waiting list, they are underrepresented as donors due to cultural misconceptions.

Tom Castañeda with STHS emphasized the impact of organ donation, stating that one donor can save up to eight lives and impact 75 more through tissue donation.

He encouraged people to register at DonateLifeTexas.org and discuss their wishes with loved ones.

South Texas Health System has seen five organ donors in the first quarter, saving 16 lives. They also promote a candlelight vigil to raise awareness.
