Illinois man charged in connection with hours-long standoff at South Padre Island hotel

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — An Illinois man was arraigned on Monday after a physical disturbance turned into an hours-long standoff with law enforcement at a hotel on South Padre Island, according to police.

Police identified 49-year-old Fernando Martinez Henize of Naperville, Illinois, as the suspect who barricaded himself in a hotel room with a firearm Sunday evening.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the disturbance at 6 p.m. Sunday after receiving a call from the front desk staff at a hotel on the 310 block of Padre Blvd.

After several hours of working to de-escalate the situation, police arrested Henize, who has been formally arraigned on multiple charges, including:

  • Two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • One count of assault family violence
  • Five counts of aggravated assault against a public servant

Henize's bond was set at $640,485.

No injuries were reported during the standoff situation.
