ICE arrests boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., alleges ties to cartel, weapons trafficking

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is reporting that Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., has been arrested by U.S. immigration officers and is being processed for expedited removal from the country.

According to DHS, Chavez who is a Mexican citizen, has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his alleged involvement with organized crime and the trafficking of firearms, ammunition, and explosives.

A news release on its website says that "in August 2023, Chavez entered the U.S. illegally with a B2 tourist visa that was valid until February 2024 -- Chavez is also believed to be an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization."

"Under President Trump, no one is above the law - including world-famous athletes," said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

On Saturday, Chavez lost to Jake Paul by unanimous decision in a 10-round cruiserweight bout in Anaheim, Calif.

Chavez, who had remained in the United States following the fight, was arrested by ICE agents on July 2, in Studio City, according to DHS.

He is the son of Julio Cesar Chavez, Mexico's most iconic boxer of all time.

Chavez Jr. briefly held the WBC middleweight crown in 2011.
