Hundreds of thousands of dollars raised for Hope Family Health Center

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – DHR Health raised more than $450,000 at its recent 18th Annual DHR Health Fishing for Hope Tournament on South Padre Island.

The monies benefit the Hope Family Health Center, the nonprofit that has facilities in McAllen and Weslaco. Hope Family Health Center which provides free health services to Rio Grande Valley community members who are without access to health care or medical insurance.

The center provides various primary medical, counseling, integrated behavioral health, peer support, case management, and wellness programs. All services are provided free of charge through the generous efforts of the center’s volunteer physicians and medical staff.

“At DHR Health, we believe in providing healthcare services for all and are grateful to everyone who helps make this possible—volunteers, sponsors, and anglers alike. Thank you to all who participated. We hope to see you again next year,” DHR said, in a posting on social media.

The weigh-in for all the fish caught at sea was Jim’s Pier on West Swordfish Street. The awards ceremony was held at SPI Conventions & Visitors Bureau.

During the awards ceremony, DHR honored Dr. Alberto Gutierrez for his nearly 26 years of devoted service as medical director and lead physician at Hope Family Health Center.

“His compassionate care and dedication have provided thousands of uninsured individuals with crucial medical treatment at no cost,” DHR stated.

“Dr. Alberto Gutierrez has been a Champion for HOPE and a Beacon of Light for nearly 26 years. He has singlehandedly pioneered a movement which has garnered the support of so many individuals that has made it possible for HOPE to do what it does best, which is to serve our patients and community,” said HOPE, in a press release.

“Dr. Alberto Gutierrez is the heart and soul of the Hope Family Health Center and has overseen the clinic’s growth from a small clinic on the verge of closing its doors to one that has strong community partnerships and has 5,000-plus patient encounters a year.”
