RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo County Emergency Management Department is advising residents across the Valley to prepare themselves and their belongings in anticipation of potential flooding this week.

Our Valley Storm Team Meteorologist Jessica Kirk stated, there is now a 70% chance of a tropical depression, or even a tropical storm developing over the next two days. She added this is the first high chance of development for the 2024 Hurricane Season.

HIGH CHANCE of Tropical Storm formation

Rick Saladaña, with the Hidalgo County Emergency Management Department, told ValleyCentral residents should prepare for any emergencies caused by heavy rain.

For those who have experienced flooding near their home, Saldaña advises residents to know the number to their municipality or city. Those who live in a county area and experience flooding are advised to call their local precinct.

He added those areas anticipating heavy rain, should consider the following:

  • If there is a leak in your roof, place a tarp on the area for a quick, temporary fix.
  • Windows with cracks, or that are poorly sealed, should be properly sealed ahead of rainfall.
  • Sandbags should be obtained to prevent water from getting into your home.
  • Clear your home's gutters.
  • Take pictures of your home before the storm and after in case of any damages.
  • Remove any tree limbs that are on the roof to prevent damages.
  • Have three to five days' worth of non-perishable foods, dry clothes, hygiene products and necessities packed and ready to go.
  • Make sure you have any important paperwork or medication on hand.
  • Have cash available.
  • Have your vehicle gas tank full.
  • If you are planning to cook on a grill, make sure you are 20 ft. away from your home.
  • If you have a generator, make sure it is 20 ft. away from the home and in an open area, to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

In case of flooding, Saldaña recommends residents stay put. Driving in flooded areas can lead to getting stranded and create waves that may impact flooded roads and homes.

If you are driving and come across a flooded area turn back.

"Turn around, don't drown," Saldaña said.

Those who live in Hidalgo County are asked to avoid any Frontage Roads as they are prone to flooding.
