Homestyle breakfast at Donna’s Biscuits & Gravy Neighborhood Kitchen

DONNA — Biscuits & Gravy Neighborhood Kitchen has a simple but delicious menu that is perfect when you’re in the mood for some homestyle breakfast and brunch.

Not really a breakfast or brunch kind of guy I decided to switch it up for the South Texas Flavor.

Trying to find something outside of the McAllen-Edinburg area, a google search brought me to 935 US-83 BUS Suite 9, Donna, right next to the Val Verde Flea Market.

To get a brunch experience, I went around after noon.

The restaurant is small but adds to the homey kind of vibe that the food also gives off. I went on Monday and it was just a few people inside but I’m sure later in the week it gets packed due to the Pulga next door.

I was instantly greeted by the waitress, and she provided great service the whole time.

The menu is simple and has all the breakfast classics from pancakes, waffles, french toast, eggs, bacon and even a lunch option with some burgers.

You can mix and match stuff together or just get their plates that come with a variety of things.

Of course with a restaurant having biscuits and gravy in the name I had to try some.

I ordered the Grandma’s Biscuits & Gravy Plate that comes with biscuits smothered in country gravy, two eggs of any style, your choice of bacon, sausage or ham and hash browns.

The plate was about $9 and most of the menu items are in that price range as well.

I ended up getting my eggs sunny side up, bacon and even ordering a short stack which is two pancakes along with some orange juice.

Not sure if they do this with everyone or I just came in at a special time but they offered me a single complimentary biscuit in gravy before my food came out.

I liked this because it let me get a chance to fully pay attention to the biscuit which did not disappoint.

The biscuit itself was delicious. Soft but with a slight crisp, it paired well with the country gravy.

Underestimating the size of the plate, I was happily surprised with how much it had.

Looking like a breakfast plate from a commercial, all my options were cooked to perfection.

The two biscuits were covered in gravy with two big pieces of bacon with lots of hash browns underneath. The eggs looked amazing and I know it’s a simple sunny side up egg but the whole plate reminded me of a home cooked breakfast by my mother.

My short stack was also delicious and I am not kidding, were the two fluffiest pancakes I have ever eaten. I had the option of putting blueberries or something else on the pancakes but wanted to see how good the pancake by itself was.

The simplicity of the plates is a strength of the restaurant. Focusing on classic breakfast items and not getting fancy with it is something I enjoyed and something that is different in other brunch spots.

So if you’re looking to have breakfast or brunch at a new location or miss some homestyle cooking, Biscuits & Gravy Neighborhood Kitchen is a great spot to check out.
