The Hidalgo Independent School District school board voted to name J.A. Gonzalez as the lone finalist for superintendent at a special board meeting held on the morning of Memorial Day.

By Texas law, there must be a 21-day waiting period after announcing a lone finalist to finalize a contract with the individual.

Gonzalez is well known in the Valley education realm, serving as superintendent at the Harlingen and McAllen school districts.

Gonzalez resigned from his position at the helm at HCISD last September.

The district agreed to pay about $260,000 as part of the resignation agreement. This was five months after a job evaluation secured him a one-year extension on his three-year contract and a $10,000 pay bump to increase his salary to $310,000.

His resignation followed the discovery of unbudgeted expenses by the school board, which sank the district’s fund balance.

Gonzalez served as McAllen ISD superintendent from 2016 to 2023.

He was named the Texas Association of School Boards Superintendent of the Year in 2020

“Dr. Gonzalez brings a distinguished 28-year career in public education, beginning as a science teacher and coach, and progressing through 9 years as a secondary principal and 9 years as a public school superintendent,” Hidalgo ISD stated in a press release. “His leadership has consistently driven academic excellence, including guiding a Rio Grande Valley school district to multiple ‘A’ ratings from the Texas Education Agency.”
