Hidalgo ISD appoints J.A. Gonzalez as new superintendent of schools

HIDALGO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo Independent School District has announced the appointment of J.A. Gonzalez as the district's new Superintendent of Schools.

Most recently, Gonzalez served as Superintendent of Harlingen CISD, and before that, he served as the McAllen ISD Superintendent, earning state and national recognition, including being named the 2020 Texas Superintendent of the Year, a first in McAllen ISD history.

According to the Hidalgo ISD news release, in his 28-year career in education, Gonzalez is looked up to for starting programs that go beyond traditional learning. From STEAM-Plus education and collegiate academies to mental health initiatives and career pathways that prepare students for a world that's constantly evolving.

His leadership has helped districts earn A-ratings from the Texas Education Agency and recognition as the Best Large District in Texas through the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, said the news release.

"We're entering an exciting new era at Hidalgo ISD," said Board President Yesenia Ayala. "Dr. Gonzalez is a dynamic and proven leader whose vision, energy, and heart align perfectly with our Pirate values. We are confident he will inspire our students, staff, and families to reach new heights."

The district will host a community welcome event in the coming weeks to introduce Gonzalez.
