HIDALGO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The new police academy in the city of Hidalgo is now open.
Hidalgo County officials Monday hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new facility that will help train local and state officers. The new academy is one of five that are open to training state officers.
The city's police chief said it was a hard-fought battle to get the academy open. They have trained instructors and boast a high passing rate.
"We worked hard to get this license. We were turned down at first, but we sent our rebuttals and eventually, we got what we needed. We got awarded our license, which we signed for on March 13," said Chief Romeo Rodriguez.
The department is set to begin training on July 1.
On April 19 the academy will host an open house to inform individuals about their offerings. For more information, call the Hidalgo Police Department at (956) 843-2737.
