Hidalgo County voters elect new school board members, pass bonds

Residents in three Hidalgo County school districts voted on board positions and propositions Saturday with McAllen voters electing two new board members.

Voters there decided two contested seats while school board President Sofia Pena ran unopposed for Place 6.

For Place 3, Robert Carreon won the seat with 2,531 votes to Allena Cano’s 1,491 votes.

Carreon is the vice president of public affairs for Teach for America for Texas with a focus on government relations.

Place 7 saw Roberto Haddad, the vice president and counsel for Government Affairs and Policy at DHR Health, win by a large margin, with 2,921 votes compared to Tiffany Ramos’ 681 votes while Rojelio Aleman II Aleman 359 votes.

The McAllen school district announced Monday that Aleman had died.

Over at Hidalgo ISD, residents voted on two propositions for the district with both passing.

“Proposition A” passed with 204 votes for and 123 votes against. The proposition asked voters for a $22.5 million bond for the construction, acquisition and equipment of school buildings in the district.

“Proposition B” passed with 199 votes for and 126 votes against. The proposition asked for a $2.5 million bond for the construction, equipment and acquisition of athletic facilities in the district including, but not limited to the construction of a sports center for softball and tennis.

Following the results from election day, Hidalgo ISD took to social media Sunday to express thanks and how “deeply grateful” it is that the community voted to pass the propositions.

“Your support of the 2025 Bond Election is more than a vote — it’s an investment in the dreams and success of generations to come,” the district said. “Together, we are shaping a brighter tomorrow for all Hidalgo ISD students and graduates.”

Progreso ISD had voters decide on three board seats.

For Place 1, Janie Sarmiento garnered 719 votes and defeated former incumbent and vice president Robert Garcia who garnered 548 votes.

Place 2 saw Agapito Perez Jr. take the seat with 715 votes compared to Jose “Morro” Garza’s 574 votes.

For Place 3, Paola Daylee Candanoza won the three-way race with 598 votes compared to Oscar Esparza’s 550 and Jasmin Candanoza’s 127.
