Hidalgo County Sheriff warns residents of phone scam from 'Captain Herrera'

HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is alerting the community of an ongoing phone scam occurring in Hidalgo County.

According to a news release from HSCO, authorities have received multiple reports of someone falsely claiming to be "Captain Herrera" and contacting residents by phone.

HCSO wants to remind the public that there is no "Captain Herrera" at its office and the calls are not coming from the department, the release stated.

The official number from the department is (956) 383-8114 and if any residents have any concerns to please call the number that has been listed.

One of the numbers that has been used in the scam is (956) 302-1009 and HCSO wants to confirm that this number is not affiliated with the department.

Anyone who receives any suspicious calls or voicemails, such as the one mentioned, is asked to contact law enforcement immediately.

If residents have any questions or concerns, they are free to contact the Sheriff's Office to verify any calls that may be from the department or a scam.
