EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Hidalgo County extended its hurricane preparedness training on Friday to help county employees and their families safely navigate hurricane season.

Training included how to store and preserve drinking water safely, a live cooking demonstration without power, and hurricane-ready recipes, as well as other essential tips.

"It's very important that a family prepares yearly. Yes, we're in hurricane season. We really ask residents to prepare to have food, non-perishable, money on hand, and medications. Make sure that you check your prescriptions and fill them when we have a hurricane warning or something of that nature, or any type of event that may be coming," said Ricardo Saldaña, Hidalgo County Emergency Management Coordinator.

Saldaña added to always think ahead and stay prepared.
