HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Hidalgo County's recent drainage improvements could be tested by the potential storm.

Precinct 4 has had a history of flooding and in 2018 and 2023 voters approved two bonds to solve the problem.

Due to the heavy rain forecasted this week, Hidalgo County Commissioner Precinct 4, Ellie Torres says the drain improvements could be put to the test.

58 projects were approved in the $190 million bond election in 2018 and in 2023 a $195 million bond was also approved.

Some of the projects from 2018 have been completed and the 2023 projects are still in early construction.

“This project is going to benefit 70 percent of the residents of Hidalgo County and quite frankly, the entire region is going to benefit from this because as we have more room for water, there’s going to be less water on our streets and our roads,” said Torres.

Drain pumps are already in place near Edinburg Lake and 10th Street to focus on areas that have a history of problems.

Torres emphasized how important it is for residents to help keep the system clean and clear from debris.

"We've brought a lot of improvements and this is gonna be put to the test with this rain event," said Torres. "We do ask our constituents to be cognizant of the debris that is in the barrages. If it's in front of their home clear that, help us out, help yourself out in making sure that your area is clear of debris and do your part and keep those areas clean."
