EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo County District Attorney's Office is partnering with local law enforcement, judges, and medical professionals for a DWI No Refusal Initiative.

The initiative is a preventative measure ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

"Fourth of July celebrations often involve alcohol, and unfortunately, that leads to an increase in impaired driving incidents," said Hidalgo County District Attorney Terry Palacios.

According to the DA's office, drivers suspected of driving while intoxicated who refuse to submit to a breath or blood alcohol test will be subject to a search warrant to obtain a mandatory blood sample.

"Our goal is not to make arrests. Our goal is to save lives. This initiative reinforces that refusal to provide a sample will not prevent prosecution," Palacios said.

The initiative will run from Thursday, July 3, through Sunday, July 6.

Law enforcement agencies urge residents and visitors to use a designated driver, rideshare services, or stay overnight if needed.
