EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo County Elections Department held a public demonstration of its newly acquired Electronic Voter Identification, also known as EViDs on Tuesday.

According to the Hidalgo County Elections Department, the introduction of the EViDs is a step forward for the county in improving the efficiency and security of the voter check-in process for elections across the county.

These new devices are replacing the previous electronic pollbook system, streamlining operations at polling locations, and will help ensure a smooth experience for both the voters and elections workers.

"The EViD system is more than just new equipment; it's an important investment in election integrity and voter confidence," said Hidalgo County Elections Administrator Hilda A. Salinas. "These electronic pollbooks will help our election workers verify voter information instantly and securely and ensure that every voter's record is updated in real time across all locations. By modernizing this part of the process, we're creating a more efficient, transparent, and reliable voting experience for everyone in Hidalgo County."

Before these new devices, voters would start the check-in process with a label printed with the voter's name, address, and a signature line.

The voter would then sign the label and then place it on a combination form. With the new electronic pollbook system, voters will now check in and sign directly on the tablet.
