HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Friends for Hope is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the Heroes and Outlaws concert, featuring Grammy award-winning group Shenandoah, on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 11 p.m. at Las Palmas Race Park in Mission.

The event aims to raise funds for the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children's Cancer and Hematology Clinic, a vital facility in the Rio Grande Valley that provides cancer treatment to children regardless of their ability to pay. Friends for Hope, a nonprofit organization, has been supporting the clinic for over 20 years, contributing significantly to its operations and growth.

"Every single dollar that is raised by Friends for Hope goes back to the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children's Cancer and Hematology Clinic," said Rene Alcala, president of Friends for Hope.

The clinic offers essential services to young patients, including chemotherapy and other treatments, without turning away any child due to financial constraints. Before the clinic's establishment, families had to travel long distances to cities like Corpus Christi, Houston, or San Antonio for similar care.

Alcala highlighted the importance of the community's support, noting that the clinic has never turned down a patient and continues to expand its capabilities, such as having a phlebotomy lab on-site.

The clinic treats patients ranging from six months to 18 years old, providing comprehensive care close to home. Friends for Hope has seen substantial growth in its fundraising efforts, from raising $5,000 in its first year to donating $510,000 last year. The organization encourages community involvement through sponsorships, donations, and participation in events like the upcoming concert.
